Mahachkala is the capital of the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. Makhachkala is the second largest Russian port on the Caspian Sea located on it’s eastern shore. The town consists of 3 districts: Leninsky, Sovetsky and Kirovsky. The population of Makhachkala is 330,800 people.
Makhachkala was founded in 1844 as a fortress. It was first called Petrovskoye in honor of Russian Emperor Peter the Great. Petrovskoye was renamed Petrovsk-Port and received town status in 1857. It was renamed Makhachkala in 1921. The city wS damaged greatly because of the earthquake in 1970.
Makhachkala is the only year-round ice-free port on the Russian coast of the Caspian Sea. It never freezes. It is accessible by railroad and equipped with an oil terminal. Ports handle large cargoes and substantial volume of oil.
There are several higher educational establishments in the republic. Among the Academies, there are the Academy of Agriculture and Medical Academy. Institutes and Universities are represented by the Institute of Management and Business, Institute of the Arts, Pedagogical University, Technical University, University of Arts and University of Russian Academy of Education.
