The Lipetskaya region was formed on the 6th of January 1954.
It is situated in the central part of the European territory of Russia on crossing of the major transport highways of the country, in 400 km on the south from Moscow. The Lipetsk region borders with Voronezh, Kursk, Oryol, Tula, Ryazan, Tambov regions.

Climate moderately - continental with moderately cold winter and warm summer.
The main rivers of the Lipetskaya region are the Don River with the inflows Voronezh, Beautiful Mecha, Sosna. The Lipetsk region is located in the forest steppe zone. Here can be seen oakeries and pine-oak forests. The birch and pine woods areas has remained here. The territory is inhabited with steppe gnawing animals, foxes, hares and ferrets. The region’s nature has been preserved in Voronezh nature reserve and in a reserve Galichya Gora (Galichya Mountain).
Elets - the ancient city with a heroic history, rich spiritual and cultural traditions. Has the developed industry.
Gryazy - a crossroads of large railways from the north to the south and from the west to the east, providing access to the markets of the central and remote regions of Russia and the countries of the CIS.
Zadonsk - one of the monastery centres of Chernozem region, inextricably related with a name of prelate Tihon Zadonskiy.
The region has the developed transport infrastructure. The territory is crossed with three trunk-railways connecting Moscow with industrial centres of the south of Russia - Voronezh, Rostov, Northern Caucasus and Donbass, with the Volga region, and also with the western cities: Orel, Bryansk, Smolensk.
Lipetsk is the administrative, industrial, cultural and resort centre of area. The city's symbol is an aerial obelisk monument. There is an inscription on its pedestal, saying that the monument is dedicated to Peter I.
There is a central park with a pond, in the centre of which stand a picturesque islet, near the obelisk. Here gush forth fountains in summer. There is a ship monument in front of the park. An inscription on it reminds of “iron plants” establishment in Lipetsk.
Lipetsk is one of the oldest resorts in Russia. A local resort began to work in 1803 on the grounds of regional mineral springs and chloride sulfate water. After discovering chalybeate mud peat here in 1867, mud treatment has been here organized since 1871.
A regional museum, the house-museums named after G.V.Plekhanov and I.A.Bunin are among places of interest.
