The territory of the Kurskaya region lies on the southwestern slopes of the Middle-Russian elevation, its hilly surface is strongly separated by river valleys and ravines. The extent of the region from the North to the South is 171 km, from the East to the West - 305 km, the area of the region is 29,8 thousand square kilometers. Region's territory can be compared to the sizes of such states as Switzerland, Belgium, Armenia, Moldavia. The distance to Moscow is 536 km, to the Black sea - 700 km. The Kurskaya region is located in the center of the European part of the Russian Federation at the intersection of transport arterias from Russia to the industrially developed centers of Ukraine, CIS coutries and Caucasian region. Kurskaya region has borders with Belgorodskaya, Bryanskaya, Voronezhskaya, Lipetskskaya and Orlovskaya regions.
Nature of the Kurskaya region is rich and diverse. More then 265 species of birds inhabit Kurskaya region, the "main one" from which appears to be the famous Kursk nightingale, whose unique trills are considered as the highest achievement in birds's vocal abilities. in the picturesque forest-steppe zone of the Kurskaya region dwell 59 species of mammals - elk, hare, fox, roe, wild boar, hedgehog, polecat, squirrels and others. Some of them are an object of hunting. In the water basins of the region fishermen can find mor than 32 species of fish: the perch, gudgeon, roach, bleak, crucian, pike and others. Much less one can find bream, roach, lin, ide, zherekh, burbot, loach, white bream, somata.
The Central Chernozem state natural preserve by the professor V. V. Alekhin is located on the territory of the Kurskaya region. Since 1979 it is included into the UNESCO biospheric preserves worldwide network, and in 1998 it became the possessor of the diploma of the council of Europe. The area of the preserve is 5284 ha. Streletsky and Kazatsky sections - these are the standard, unploughed meadow steppes in combination with the oak groves. Bukreyevy Barmy and Barkalova with the relict flora of chalky hills scientists call the "country of alive fossils". Two additional sections of the preserve are floodlands: Zorinskiy with swamps and the Psla. Besides the Central Chernozem preserve there are six zoological and three botanical reservations in the territory of region , and also 58 monuments of nature. In the eastern regions of the region there are several plant communities, preserved from ten thousand years ago. In these associations there are alive fossiles of the period before ice-age steppe- vegetation over the total area more than 70 ha. Many of them are signed in the Red Book and need special protection.
Stay in the Kurskaya district is one of the most cognitive and the most pleasant journeys into the Russian province. Only in 500 kilometers from Moscow is located the ancient edge, connected with the capital with air and railroad main lines, the region passes the federal highway Moscow- Simferopol. The tour to the nightingales' area is the best route to get aquainted with ancient Russia and today's Russia.
Kursk is the administrative and cultural center of the region. The city and its warriors were praised in “Lay of Igor’s Warfare”. In the 20th century the city was destined to be a symbol of war victories. The Battle of Kursk reserved the war trend and became half the battle of the Soviet army. Memorial complexes “Kurskaya Duga” and “Saying for the fallen during the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945” and also a military-historical museum of the Battle of Kursk are open in the city in memory of these events.
The city is also famous for its 1000-years history.
First records about Kursk go back to 1032 and in 1508 Kursk joined Russia. Cathedrals and civil buildings of different times and style were history’s bystanders. Sergievo-Kazansky cathedral, the 13th century’s architectural monuments, is among the best-known. It was performed in baroque style. The cathedral’s main part is a two-storey building topped by an eight-slope dome, blue cupola of which is spangled with golden stars.
Znamensky cathedral (the cathedral of Virgin of the Sign) (1826) was erected in honour of victory in the war of 1812 on the territory of Znamensky monastery (the monastery of Virgin of the Sign). The cathedral is centrically arranged as a huge cubic volume. A light dome drum, decorated with a spherical cap, towers over it.
The Holy Trinity convent ensemble is another monument of temple architecture, which attract tourists. First records of the monastery go back to 1631. The ensemble’s centre is a two-stored cathedral, the main altar of which, located on the upper floor, was consecrated for the sake of the Holy Trinity, and on the lower on – for the sake of “Hodegetria” – The Most Holy Mother of God.
The house of former Noblemen Assembly is among interesting buildings of secular architecture. This is a three-stored building of the late 19h century. The architecture style is exceptional as it combines different styles. As the building was built especially for the Noblemen Assembly, it was marked out with a gorgeous internal decoration. A Great hall with a stage and a balcony is especially famous. Many famous singers and writers performed on the stage f the Great Hall: F.I.Shalyapin, L.V.Sobinov, V.Mayakovsky.
The architectural ensemble, erected in the times of Boris Godunov, - the chambers of the Romodanovsky boyars – compels tourists’ attention. Admittedly it belonged to the Romodanovsky princes – waywodes of Kursk. Legendary, the leaders of a popular uprising Stepan Razin and his brother Frol were brought and then relayed to a Kursk waywode Romodanovsky here. Today there is a state regional archeological museum in the chambers. Among the showpieces are: weapon, ceramics, sculptures and utensils of different times (from the time of paleolith till the Middle Ages).
A state regional museum gets acquaints with the city’s and region’s history. The exposition located in 36 halls and is divided into sections: nature, history of Ante-Soviet, Soviet and modern times. Here have been collected makes out of precious metals, iron, wood, glass and ceramics; weapon collection; clothes and furniture collections, and also manuscripts, old-printed and hand-written books.

Kursk is also famous for motorcar and fire-prevention history museums. The motorcar museum consists both of printed- and video documents and original showpieces as well: cars’ various types. The fire-prevention history museum tells about the fire-prevention performance from the times of Ivan the Terrible and up till now.
