Izhevsk

Izhevsk city is the capital of the Republic. Its biography dates back to 1760, when according to a decree of a tsar an ironworks factory was set up on the Izh river.
At the beginning of the 19th century the  invasion threat coming from Napoleon's France made the Russian Tsar Paul the First assume the responsibilities of a new large arms factory construction. That was the beginning of Izhevsk gunsmiths' glorious history. In the memory of the first victories the conquered Napoleon's banners are for ever frozen in metal on of the main arms factory building tower.

Izhevsk is the site of one of the most famous arsenals in Russia, at which Mikhail Kalashnikov designed his famous AK-47 assault rifle. As of 2006, Kalashnikov still lives in Izhevsk.

In the post-Soviet period Izhevsk became known as home to a vibrant art and music scene. Some of the most famous institutions include the Italmas, an Udmurt folk theater and dance company, and the local circus. In 2001-2004 a beautiful new auditorium was built in the center of town to serve as a permanent home for the city circus. Today circus acts from Izhevsk and other Russian and European cities entertain visitors at the Izhevsk Circus.

Izhevsk's most notable museums include the Kalashnikov Museum (weapons), the Arsenal Museum (history of Izhevsk), the Galina Kulakova Museum, the Gallery of National Arts (paintings), the "Galeria" Arts Center, the Izhmash Museum, the National Kuzebai Gerd Museum (part of the Arsenal), and the Gennadiy Krasilnikov Apartment-Museum. The Presidential Palace is also popular with tourists. The Pyotr I.Chaikovsky's House-museum - a unique memorial architectural ensemble - is in Votkinsk (40 km from Izhevsk). The Chaikovski family relics are presented there.
