The Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug- Yugra, historical name Yugra, was founded on December, 10, 1930, by Decree of the All-Russia Central Executive Committee as the Ostyako-Vogulsky National Okrug with the center in the settlement of Samarovo. By Decree of the President of the Russian Federation # 841 of July 25, 2003 the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug was renamed into the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Yugra.
The administrative centre of the Okrug is the town of Khanty-Mansiysk. By January 1, 2006 the number of resident population is 1478.2 ths. people. The Okrug territory occupies 534.8 ths. km. The Okrug is situated in the medial part of Russia. It occupies the central part of the West Siberian plain. In the North the Okrug borders with the Yamalo-Nenetsky Autonomous Okrug, in the North-West - with the Republic of Komi, in the South-West - with the Sverdlovsk Region, in the South - with the Tobolsk and Uvatsk Districts of the Tyumen Region, in the South-East and the East - with the Tomsk Region and Krasnoyarsky Krai.
Relief is presented by combination of plains, foothills and mountains. There are raised plains (150-301ì), low plains (100-150 ì), and also lowlands (less than 100 ì). Absolute heights in water-meadows of the Ob and Irtysh make 10-50 m. The Ural part of the Okrug has middle-mountain relief. The length of the mountain area makes 450 kms with 30-45 kms width. The maximal heights: National - 1894 m (Subpolar Ural) and Pedy - 1010 m (Northern Ural).
The climate is sharply continental. The average temperature in January is from -18 up to -24 Co, the average temperature in July is from +15,7 up to +18,4 Co.
The river system of the Okrug comprises the rivers Ob and Irtysh, their 12 inflows (N.Sosva, Konda, Vakh, Yugan, Kazym, Pim, Tromegan, Agan, B. Salym, Lyapin, Lyamin, Nazym), and other small rivers. The total number of the rivers in the Okrug - about 30 thousand.
There are 290 thousand lakes (square - over 1 ha) in the Okrug. Kondinsky Sor, Leushinsky Tuman, Vandemtor and Tromemtor belong to the category of large (square - over 100 sq.m).
Vegetation is presented by communities of woods, bogs, meadows, reservoirs, mountain tundras. Wood territories of the Okrug account for 52,1%. Zone of the middle taiga dominates. It is presented by dark and light coniferous, small-leaf bearing and mixed woods. Fur-tree, cedar, larch, fir, pine grow there. Meadow vegetation belongs to the water-meadows and lowlands. Lichen group, used as deer pastures, are spread in the northern territories. Woods and bogs are rich in fruiter kinds of vegetation: cranberry, cowberry, bilberry, blueberry, currant, cloudberry, raspberry, dogrose, bird cherry, mountain ash.
Fauna: fox, polar fox, fiber, sable, marten, ermine, Siberian weasel, polecat, mink, weasel, otter, hare, mole, chipmunk, wild northern deer, lamb etc. Bird: goose, wood-grouse, blackcock, hazel grouse, partridge, duck, woodcock. In reservoirs of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug 42 kinds of fish, including high-valuable trade fish - sturgeon, sterlet, white salmon, muksun, chir (shchokur), pelyad, sig (pyzhyan), Sosva herring (tugun).
The Mongols called that ancient Yugra land as silver antiquity, mother "Sebir" - the country of forests. The inhabitants of that country were dressed in animals’ skins, ate meat and fish, moved along "eternal snows" by skiing and called themselves Khanty and Mansi.
At present Yugra consists of oil-derricks, pipelines, highways, modern airports and establishments, tourism, hotel, restaurant and entertainment complexes.
The Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - Yugra is a rapidly developing region, taking one of the first positions in the country, regarding the volume of investments. The Okrug Government pays much attention to the tourism industry development, staking on the event, sports, ethnographic, hunting, fishing and cruise tourism. The competitions of international level on winter sports in Khanty-Mansiysk have become traditional.
The scales of tourism objects construction are amazing. For the last few years the Center of arts for the talented children of the North, Skiing Center, Hotel complex "Yugorskaya Dolina", "On Seven Hills"., entertainment complex "Territory of the pioneers" with the bowling center, entertainment complex "Langal" with the cinema hall, sushi bar, theatrical & concert complex are built in Khanty-Mansiysk; the palace-pavilion "Gostiny Dvor" is under construction.
It is hard to overestimate the wealth of the Okrug flora and fauna, iniquity of many natural factors, including the underwater thermal sources.

The grand events and events of international and Russian level: festivals, contests, sports events are held in the Autonomous Okrug. It is a basis for in-bound and out-bound tourism development in the Okrug.

The rivers and other water basins of the are the sources of fishing for fishermen and sportsmen. The Ob is the living environment of the salmon, sturgeon and pollan species. The sturgeon and sterlet are representatives of the family of the sturgeon. The white fish is a representative of the salmon family. The Sosva herring and others are representatives of the pollan family. The basin of the pollan species in the Ob is the richest in the country.
In distant localities experienced people and new-comers can find adventures. There is a lot of virgin lakes where nobody caught fish. To catch fish one should get a special permit by the local authorities.
If you prefer fishing or hunting to the warm apartments or a computer in winter time when the temperature is 20 degrees below zero and in windy weather the temperature is 40 degrees below zero, the Yugra land is for you.
Khanty-Mansiysk is one of the modern and rapidly developing towns of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug.
In 1637 the Samarovsky Yam was founded on the right bank of the Irtysh River not far from its falling into the Ob River. The settlement of Samarovo and then the town of Khanty-Mansiysk originated from that place.
At present a little remind of those old days. The town is developing rapidly and is formed not only as a center of oil district, but is becoming a center of business activity, great sports, national culture.
Modern dwelling houses and administrative buildings, nice squares and streets, unique sports, cultural and educational facilities match to majestic nature of Siberia.
The town of Khanty-Mansiysk has its own unique features: it has a lot of plants and trees, it is surrounded by forests and a wandering band of the Irtysh River, it has its specific architecture. The small town has a great history and great perspectives.
